Mr. Len and Mrs. Beryl Bodey of South Australia were very keen pelargonium followers and were also friends of the late 'Ted' Both. Through the keenness of the Bodeys, the South Australian Pelargonium Society came into being, the first Geranium & Pelargonium Society to be formed in Australia.
Mr. Bodey introduced quite a number of new varieties, mainly regals and later the Formosum Hybrids. They were very selective in their releases and, if the new variety did not come up to their standard, it was discarded. Mr. Bodey released his new varieties through Mrs. M. Edwards, who was then living at Red Cliffs, Victoria.
While Mr. Both concentrated mainly on zonals, Mr. Bodey favoured the regals and later the Formosum Hybrids, which were quite outstanding, but unfortunately very few were made available to the public.
Mr. Bodey's releases were mainly after the death of Mr. Both, thus the interest continued which Mr. Both had started for pelargoniums in Australia.
Mr. Bodey's health deteriorated following the death of his wife. We have listed the numerous plants released by Mr. Bodey, using the information supplied by the Australian Geranium Council's Check List of 1972 which, according to Mr. C. Tilley of South Australia, is as near as possible to what cultivars were hybridised by Mr. Bodey from the 1950's to the 1970's.
